🌿 Euphorbia bupleurifolia – The Pineapple-Form Caudex

Category: Rare Caudiciform Euphorbia
Origin: South Africa
Delivery: Ships bare root with care guide

Description:

Euphorbia bupleurifolia is a rare and highly collectible caudiciform succulent, often nicknamed the “Pineapple Euphorbia” due to its sculptural, textured stem that resembles the fruit. Native to the dry regions of South Africa, it features a woody, globular caudex topped with elegant, narrow green leaves during its growing season.

The caudex stores water and nutrients, allowing it to survive long dry periods. During winter dormancy or extreme heat, the plant may shed its leaves, leaving behind a beautiful, natural bonsai-style form — making it both a botanical curiosity and a display-worthy specimen.

🌟 Key Features:

✔️ Pineapple-like woody caudex
✔️ Narrow, upright leaves in growth season
✔️ Summer-growing, winter-dormant (India-adapted)
✔️ Ideal for bonsai-style succulent displays
✔️ Rare and slow-growing Euphorbia species

🪴 Care Guide (Adapted for Indian Climate):

  • ☀️ Light:
Bright indirect light to full sun. Ideal for sunny balconies or windowsills. Partial shade in peak summer (above 40°C) in central/south India.

  • 💧 Watering:

    • Active Season (Summer – March to October): Water when soil is completely dry. Soak and allow to drain well.

    • Dormant Season (Winter – November to February): Water very sparingly or not at all. Leaves may fall off — this is normal.

  • 🌡️ Temperature:
Thrives between 15°C and 35°C. Protect from cold drafts or frost in northern India during winter. Keep dry in monsoon season.

  • 🌱 Soil Mix:
Use a fast-draining cactus mix with added pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. Avoid moisture-retentive soils like garden soil or cocopeat.

💤 Dormancy Cycle (India):

  • Dormant Months: November to February – leaves may drop, plant enters rest phase

  • Active Growth: March to October – leaf flush and growth resumes

Tip: Do not force watering during dormancy. Resume when new leaf buds appear.

🪴 Potting Tip:

Use a shallow terracotta pot to highlight the caudex and encourage healthy drying. Leave the upper part of the caudex slightly exposed above soil for best aesthetic effect.
